Helen Keller was born in America in 1880.When she was nineteen months old she became very sick.Helen got better,but she could not see or hear anything.She was completely blind and deaf.
As Helen grew up,she couldn't understand what was happening around her.Sometimes she beecame very frustrated.She broke things in the house and screamed loudly.Helen's mother and father didn't know what to do.They decided to find a teacher for her.
When Helen was seven years old,a teacher called Anne Sullivan came to live with the family.Her job was to teach Helen how to communicate with the people around her.
Anne wanted to teach Helen some words,but she did not know how to do it.Then,one day she saw Helen washing her hands under a tap.Anne wrote the word 'W-A-T-E-R' on Helen's hand with her finger.At last Helen understood that things had names.That day,she learned to spell thirty words.Soon she could communicate with her family and other people by spelling words on their hands.
When Helen was nine years old,Anne decided to teach her to talk.Helen sat for hours with her fingers on Anne's mouth.She felt the shape of Anne's lips as she spoke.Finally,Helen was able to speak the words herself.
When she grew up,Helen became very famous.She travelled all over the world,explaining what blind and deaf people can do.She even wrote many books.Helen died in 1968 when she was 88 years old.
